Maine (spr. mēn), Sir Henry James Sumner, Jurist, geb. 15. Aug. 1822 zu Caversham Grove in Oxfordshire, gest. 3. Febr. 1888 in Cannes, wurde 1844 Tutor des Trinity Hall College, 1847 Professor für Zivilrecht daselbst und übernahm 1854 eine ähnliche Stellung am Middle-Temple. Auch war er Mitarbeiter am »Morning Chronicle« und an der »Saturday Review«. 1862 Mitglied der indischen Regierung, ging er nach Indien, wo er in legislativer Richtung verschiedene Reformen durchsetzte und zum Vizekanzler der Universität Kalkutta ernannt wurde. 1869 kehrte er nach England zurück und ward im folgenden Jahr Professor der Rechtswissenschaft in Oxford, Ende 1871 Mitglied des Staatsrats für Indien. 1878 gab er seine Professur auf, weil er zum Master of Trinity Hall in Cambridge gewählt worden war. 1887 erhielt er die Professur für internationales Recht in Cambridge. Er schrieb unter anderm: »Ancient law: its connection with the early history of society, and its relation to modern ideas« (1861, 11. Aufl. 1890); »Village communities in the East and West« (1871, 5. Aufl. 1890); »Lectures on the early history of institutions« (1875, 4. Aufl. 1890); »The effects of observation of India on modern European thought« (1876); »Lectures on modern theories of succession to property after death« (1878); »Early law and custom« (1883, neue Aufl. 1890); »Popular government« (1885, 3.
