Bartlett, 1) John Russell, amerikan. Ethnolog und Historiograph, geb. 23. Okt. 1805 in Providence (Rhode-Island), gest. 28. Mai 1886, war Kaufmann, widmete sich aber seit 1849 dem Studium der Geschichte und Ethnologie. Mit A. Gallatin begründete er die American Ethnological Society. Als Kommissar der Expedition zur Bestimmung der Grenzlinie zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Mexiko durchzog er 1850–53 Texas und New Mexico. Die wissenschaftlichen Resultate wurden von der Regierung veröffentlicht (1857–58); die persönlichen Erlebnisse teilte B. in dem Werk »Personal narrative of explorations and incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California etc.« (New York 1854, 2 Bde.) mit. Von seinen übrigen Schriften, meist bibliographischen Inhalts, sind das »Dictionary of Americanisms« (5. Aufl., Boston 1884) und der »Catalogue of books relating to North and South America« (New York 1865–71, 4 Bde.) hervorzuheben.
