Banim

Banim (spr. bēnim), John, Pseudonym O'H ara, irischer Romandichter, geb. 3. April 1798 in Kilkenny versuchte sich zuerst als Porträtmaler, ging dann zur Schriftstellerei über, lebte, durch körperliche Leiden gehemmt, in dürftigen Verhältnissen, bis ihm die Regierung 1836 eine Pension bewilligte, und starb 13. Aug. 1842 in Windgap Cottage bei Kilkenny. B., Irlands »Walter Scott«, schrieb eine Reihe von Lebensbildern und Sittenschilderungen, in denen er die Licht- und Schattenseiten des irischen Volkes in kräftigen Zügen darstellte und bei etwas übertriebener Kleinmalerei und Bevorzugung des Schrecklichen ein glückliches Kompositionstalent bewies. Zuerst erschienen: »Tales of the O'Hara family« (2 Serien, Lond. 1825–27, 6 Bde.), darunter »Crohoore« (deutsch: »Der Zwerg«, Hamb. 1828) und »The Nowlans« (deutsch, Leipz. 1835), dann zahlreiche andre, wie »Boyne Water« (1828), »The mayor of Windgap« (1835) und »Father Connel« (1842). Vgl. P. John Murray, Life of John B. (Lond. 1857). – Sein Bruder Michael, geb. 1796, gest. 30. Aug. 1874, war Mitarbeiter an den genannten »Tales of the O'Hara family« und veröffentlichte unter dem Titel: »The town of the cascades« (Lond. 1864, 2 Bde.) Szenen aus dem irischen Volksleben, in denen sich warmes Gefühl und origineller Humor aussprechen.
