Markham (spr. mārkĕm), 1) Clements Robert, engl. Geograph und Reisender, geb. 20. Juli 1830 in Stillingfleet bei York, trat 1844 in die englische Marine, beteiligte sich 1850–51 an der Expedition zur Aufsuchung Franklins, nahm dann seinen Abschied und erforschte 1852–54 Peru, das er 1860–1861 aufs neue bereiste, um Cinchonapflanzen von dort nach Indien zu bringen. Dann besuchte er Ceylon und Indien (1865–66), wurde 1867 Sekretär im India Office, 1868 Kustos des geographischen Departements daselbst und begleitete 1867–68 als Geograph die abessinische Expedition. 1858–87 bekleidete M. das Amt eines Sekretärs der Hakluyt Society, und seit 1899 ist er Präsident der königlichen Geographischen Gesellschaft, deren Sekretär er seit 1863 war. Er veröffentlichte unter anderm: »Franklin's footsteps; sketches of Greenland« (1852); »Journey to Cuzco and visit to Lima« (1856); »Travels in Peru and India« (1862; deutsch, 2. Aufl., Leipz. 1874); »Contributions towards a grammar and dictionary of Quichua« (1864); »Spanish irrigation« (1867); »A history of the Abyssinian expedition« (1869); »Life of the great Lord Fairfax« (1870); »Memoir on the Indian surveys« (1871, 2. Aufl. 1878); »The threshold of the unknown region« (4. Aufl. 1876); »General sketch of the history of Persia« (1874); »Memoir of the countess of Chinchon« (1875); »Narrative of the mission of George Bogle te Tibet and of the journey of Thomas Manning to Lhasa« (2. Aufl. 1879); »Peruvian bark, account of the introduction of Cinchona cultivation into British India« (1880); »The war between Peru and Chile« (1883); »A history cf Peru« (Chicago 1892); »Christopher Columbus« (1892), Biographien von John Davis (1889), J. Rennell (1895) u. a. M. hat außerdem zahlreiche Werke für die Hakluyt Society herausgegeben und das altperuanische Drama »Ollanta« (1871) ins Englische übersetzt; 1872–78 gab er das »Geographical Magazine« heraus.

2) Albert Hastings, brit. Marineoffizier und Nordpolfahrer, geb. 1841, begleitete 1873 den Kapitän Adams auf dem Walfischfänger Arctic durch die Baffinbai in den Golf von Boothia Felix und machte 1875–76 als Kapitän auf dem Dampfer Alert die Nordpolexpedition unter Nares mit, wobei er zu Schlitten über 83° nördl. Br. hinaus gelangte. 1879 unternahm M. mit der Jacht Isbjörn eine Rekognoszierungsfahrt nach Franz Joseph-Land, wurde aber schon an der Nordostecke von Nowaja Semlja durch Packeis zur Umkehr gezwungen. Er schrieb: »Cruise of the Rosario amongst the New Hebrides« (1873); »A whaling cruise to Baffin's Bay and the Gulf of Boothia« (1874, 2. Aufl. 1875); »The great frozen sea; voyage of the Alert« (1878, 6. Aufl. 1884); »Northward ho! Capt. Phipps' expedition« (1879); »The voyages and works of the navigator John Davis« (1880, Hakluyt Society); »A polar reconnaissance: Voyage of the Isbjörn in 1879« (1881); »Life of Sir John Franklin and the North- West Passage« (1891).
