Brown-Sequard

Brown-Sequard (spr. braun-ßekár), Charles Edouard, Physiolog, geb. 8. April 1817 in Port Louis auf Mauritius, gest. 2. April 1894 in Paris. studierte seit 1838 in Paris und widmete sich dann experimentell-physiologischen Untersuchungen und der Erforschung der Nervenkrankheiten. Er lebte längere Zeit in Nordamerika und London, hier als Arzt am Hospital für Paralytische, wurde 1869 Professeur agrégé an der medizinischen Fakultät zu Paris und 1878 Professor der Experimentalphysiologie am Collège de France. Er arbeitete über die Zusammensetzung des Blutes, die tierische Wärme, das Rückenmark, Muskel-, Nerven- und Gangliensystem und schrieb: »Experimental researches applied to physiology and pathology« (New York 1853); »Deux mémoires sur la physiologie de la moelle épiniere« (Par. 1855); »Experimental and clinical researches on the physiology and pathology of the spinal cord« (Richmond 1855); »Recherches experimentales sur la physiologie des capsules surrénales« (Par. 1856); »Researches on epilepsy: its artificial production in animals and its etiology, nature and treatment in man« (Bost. 1857); »Course of lectures on the physiology and pathology of the central nervous system« (Philad. 1860); »Lectures on the diagnosis and treatment of functional nervous affections« (das. 1868); »Dual character of the brain« (Washingt. 1877); »Two lectures on convulsions and paralysis as effects of disease of the base of the brain« (Philad. 1878). Seit 1858 gab er das »Journal de la physiologie de l'homme et des animaux«, seit 1868 (mit Charcot und Vulpian) die »Archives de physiologie normale et pathologique«, seit 1873 die amerikanischen »Archives of scientific and practical medicine and surgery« heraus.
