White

White (spr. ūait), 1) Andrew Dickson, amerikan. Geschichtschreiber und Diplomat, geb. 7. Nov. 1832 in Homer (New York), besuchte das Yale College, ging 1853 nach Europa, studierte 1854–55 in Berlin und erhielt 1857 die Professur der Geschichte an der Universität zu Ann Arbor in Michigan. 1863 in den Senat des Staates New York gewählt, regte er den Senator Ezra Cornell zur Stiftung der Cornell-Universität in Ithaka (New York) an, deren Präsident W. wurde, und die er eifrig förderte. 1878 war er einer der offiziellen Vertreter der Union bei der Pariser Weltausstellung, 1879–81 Gesandter der Vereinigten Staaten in Berlin, 1892–94 Gesandter in St. Petersburg und 1897–1902 Botschafter in Berlin. Er schrieb: »Lectures on mediaeval and modern history« (1861); »A syllabus of lectures on modern history« (1876); »The warfare of science« (1876); »The new Germany« (1882); »Studies in general history and the history of civilisation« (1885); »European schools of history and politics« (1887); »History of the warfare of science with theology in christendom« (1896, 2 Bde.) u. a. Vgl. seine »Autobiography« (New York 1905, 2 Bde.; deutsch: »Aus meinem Diplomatenleben«, Leipz. 1906).

2) Sir George Stewart, engl. General, geb. 1835, trat 1853 in die Armee, zeichnete sich während des indischen Aufstandes aus, nahm 1879–80 an dem Feldzuge gegen die Afghanen teil, machte 1885 die Nilexpedition mit und befehligte 1885–87 als Generalmajor die englischen Truppen auf dem Feldzuge gegen Birma. 1889 erhielt er ein Kommando in Indien, wurde 1893 als Nachfolger des Lords Roberts Oberbefehlshaber der britischen Truppen daselbst, 1898 Generalstabschef des britischen Heeres und 1899 Befehlshaber der englischen Streitkräfte in Natal. Er wurde von den Buren in Ladysmith eingeschlossen, behauptete sich aber trotz schwerer Krankheiten und starker Verluste, bis die Feinde infolge ihrer Niederlagen im Westen 1. März 1900 die Belagerung ausgaben. W. kehrte wegen seiner geschwächten Gesundheit nach England zurück und wurde 1903 zum Feldmarschall ernannt.
