Tope

Tope (aus sanskr. Stûpa, »Grabhügel«), Kultusdenkmäler des Buddhismus, grabhügelähnliche Gebäude, in denen vielfach Reliquien Buddhas und seiner Schüler aufbewahrt wurden. Sie sind in halbkugelförmiger Ausbauchung aus Steinen errichtet und ruhen auf einem terrassenartigen, in späterer Zeit bisweilen hoch emporgeführten Unterbau, manchmal von einem Kreise schlanker Säulen umgeben und mit besonderer Portalanlage versehen; die Krone bildet ein Schirm (s. Tafel »Indische Kunst I«, Fig. 1). Dergleichen Denkmäler sind in großer Anzahl über Indien bis Afghanistan hinein und gegen Norden bis ins südliche Sibirien verbreitet. Auf Ceylon und in Vorderindien heißen sie Dagop (aus Dhâtugarbha, »Reliquienbehälter«). Vgl.
