Pathos

Pathos (griech.), eigentlich das Leiden, das Ergriffensein von etwas; im ästhetischen Sinne jeder stärkere Affekt, die gesteigerte Gemütsbewegung, die gehobene, feierliche Stimmung. Pathetisch ist daher die durch solchen Affekt des Künstlers oder Dichters belebte und gehobene Darstellung. Die affektvolle Auffassung muß durch das Wesen der Sache begründet erscheinen; andernfalls erweckt sie den Eindruck des Gekünstelten und Manierierten. Das P. findet vor allem in der Poesie (in der Lyrik, vor allem der Ode, dem Epos, dem Drama) seine Stelle; aber auch der Musik, Architektur, Malerei, Plastik ist es nicht fremd.
