Land, 1) Jan Pieter Nicolaas, niederländ. Philosoph und Orientalist, geb. 23. April 1834 in Delft, erwarb 1857 den Doktorgrad und wurde 1864 Professor der orientalischen Sprachen und der Philosophie in Amsterdam, 1872 Professor der Philosophie an der Universität in Leiden. Er veröffentlichte unter anderm: »Joannes, Bischof von Ephesos, der erste syrische Kirchenhistoriker« (Leid. 1856); »Anecdota Syriaca« (das. 1862–75, 4 Bde.); »Hebreeuwsche Grammatica« (Amsterd. 1869, engl. Ausg. 1876); »Recherches sur l'histoire de la Gamme arabe« (Leid. 1884); »Joannis episcopi Ephesi Commentarii de beatis orientalibus« (a. d. Syrischen, Amsterd. 1889); »Het Luitboek van Thysius« (das. 1889); »Over onze kennis der javaansche muziek« (das. 1891); »Arnold Geulincx und seine Philosophie« (Haag 1895, deutsch). Auch gab er den Briefwechsel und musikalische Kompositionen von Const. Huygens (mit Jonckbloet, 1882) sowie die Werke von Spinoza (mit van Vloten, Haag 1882, 2 Bde.) und Arnold Geulincx (das. 1891, 3 Bde.) heraus.

2) Hans, Schriftsteller, geb. 25. Aug. 1861 in Berlin, studierte in Leipzig, ging aber dann zum Bankfach über und trat gleichzeitig mit schriftstellerischen Arbeiten hervor, um sich bald ausschließlich der literarischen Laufbahn zu widmen. Seinen Erstlingswerken: »Stiefkinder der Gesellschaft« (Berl. 1888, 2. Aufl. 1899) und »Die am Wege sterben« (das. 1889), ließ er zunächst mehrere Dramen folgen: »Amor Tyrann us« (das. 1889), »Der Skorpion« (Dresd. 1891) und »Die heilige Ehe« (mit F. Holländer, Berl. 1892). Festern Boden aber gewann er mit seinen Erzählungen. Wir nennen hier die Novellen: »Sünden« (Berl. 1892, neue Aufl. 1902), »Mutterrecht« (das. 1894), »Die Tugendhafte« (das. 1895), sowie die Romane: »Der neue Gott« (Dresd. 1891), »Die Richterin« (Berl. 1893, 4. Aufl. 1894), »um das Weib« (das. 1896), »Schlagende Wetter« (1897), »Von zwei Erlösern« (1897), »Liebesopfer« (1900), »Und wem sie just passieret« (1899), »Liebesopfer« (1900), »Bande!!« (1902), »Artur Imhoff« (1905).
