Hargraves (spr. hárgrēws), Edmund Hammond, Entdecker der Goldfelder von Australien, geb. 1815 in Gosport bei Portsmouth, gest. 1. Nov. 1891 in Sydney, kam früh nach Australien, von wo er 1849 die Goldfelder Kaliforniens besuchte. Veranlaßt durch die Ähnlichkeit der geologischen Verhältnisse, untersuchte er nach seiner Rückkehr den Westabhang der Blauen Berge und entdeckte auch 1851 reiche Goldfelder. H. wurde zum Kommissar der Kronländereien ernannt und erhielt 1853 von der Regierung eine Belohnung von 10,000 Pfd. Sterl. Er veröffentlichte: »Australia and its goldfields described« (Lond. 1855).
