Kaulen

Kaulen, Franz, kath. Theolog, geb. 20. März 1827 in Düsseldorf, wurde 1859 Repetent am theologischen Konvikt in Bonn, 1863 Privatdozent, 1880 außerordentlicher und 1883 ordentlicher Professor an der Universität; seit 1892 ist er päpstlicher Hausprälat, seit 1903 Mitglied der päpstlichen Bibelkommission. Er schrieb außer mehreren Andachtsbüchern: »Institutiones linguae mandschuricae« (Regensb. 1856); »Die Sprachverwirrung zu Babel« (Mainz 1861); »Liber Jonae« (das. 1862); »Legende von dem seligen Hermann Joseph« (2. Aufl., das. 1880); »Geschichte der Vulgata« (das. 1869); »Sprachliches Handbuch zur Vulgata« (das. 1870, 2. Aufl. 1904); »Einleitung in die Heilige Schrift Alten und Neuen Testamentes« (Freiburg 1876–87, 3 Tle.; 4. Aufl. 1897–99; verkürzte Ausg. 1897); »Assyrien und Babylonien nach den neuesten Entdeckungen« (5. Aufl., das. 1899); »Der biblische Schöpfungsbericht« (das. 1902). Auch bearbeitete er die von Hergenröther (s. d.) unternommene 2. Auflage des Kirchenlexikons von Wetzer und Welte (Freiburg 1882–1903) sowie die hebräische Grammatik von Vosen (18. Aufl., das. 1900) und übersetzte des Josephus »Jüdische Altertümer« (3. Aufl., Köln 1892).
