Herwerden, Henricus van, Philolog, geb. 17. Sept. 1831 in Beetsterzwaag (Friesland), studierte in Leiden, bereiste 1856–59 Frankreich, Italien, Spanien und Deutschland, war 1860–64 Gymnasiallehrer in Groningen und dem Haag und ist seit 1864 Professor der griechischen Sprache in Utrecht. Seine Haupttätigkeit bildet die textkritische Behandlung griechischer Schriftsteller, namentlich der szenischen Dichter. Er gab heraus: »Dionysii Halicarnassensis epistolae« (Groning. 1861); Sophokles' »Oedipus Rex« (Utr. 1866); Euripides' »Ion« (das. 1875) und »Helena« (Leid. 1895); Aristophanes' »Pax« (das. 1897); Thukydides (Utr. 1877–82, 5 Bde.), Herodot (das. 1884 ff., 5 Bde.), Antiphon (das. 1890), Aristoteles' »Ἀϑηναίων πολιτεία« (mit J. van Leeuwen, Leid. 1891), Lysias (Utr. 1899) u. a. Sonst nennen wir: »Spicilegium Vaticanum« (Leid. 1860); »Studia critica in epigrammata graeca« (das. 1890); »Lexicon graecum suppletorium et dialecticum« (das. 1902); »Collectanea critica etc. ad Th. Kockii opus Comicorum Atticorum fragmenta« (das. 1903); endlich niederländische Übersetzungen von Sophokles' »König Ödipus« (auf holländischen Bühnen vielfach ausgeführt), »Ödipus auf Kolonos«, »Elektra« (»Drie treurspelen van Sophocles«, Utr. 1881) und »Antigone« (das. 1890) sowie von Platons« »Phädon« (Amsterd. 1898).
