Flinders, Matthew, engl. Seefahrer, geb. 16. März 1774 in Donington (Lincolnshire), gest. 19. Juli 1814 in London, ging 1790 zur See und untersuchte 1795–99 mit dem Arzte Baß z. T. in einem 2,5 m langen Boote die Südostküste Australiens von der Hervey-Bai im O. bis Vandiemensland, das er vollständig umfuhr. Auf einer neuen Reise erforschte er mit dem ausgezeichneten Naturforscher Robert Brown (s. Brown 3) 1801–02 die Süd- und Ostküste Australiens, durchfuhr die Torresstraße und nahm den Carpentariagolf auf, bis ihn der schlechte Zustand seines Schiffes zur Rückkehr nach Sydney und Europa zwang. Unterwegs litt er Schiffbruch, wurde aber gerettet und gelangte nach Isle de France, wo ihn die Franzosen 7 Jahre lang gefangen hielten. F. war einer der ersten, die den Einfluß des Schiffseisens auf den Kompaß erkannten (s. Flindersstange). Er schrieb: »A voyage to Terra Australis« (Lon d. 1814, 2 Bde.; deutsch, Weim. 1816). Vgl.
