Veth, Pieter Johannes, niederländ. Geograph, Ethnograph und Orientalist, geb. 2. Dez. 1814 in Dordrecht, gest. 14. April 1895 in Arnheim, wurde 1838 Lehrer an der Militärakademie in Breda, 1841 Professor der orientalischen Sprachen am Athenäum in Franeker, 1843 an der Universität in Amsterdam, 1864 an der Staatsanstalt für Indien in Leiden und lebte seit 1885 in Arnheim. Er schrieb: »Borneo's Wester-afdeeling, geographisch, statistisch, historisch« (Zalt-Bommel 1854–56, 2 Bde.); »Het eiland Timor« (Amsterd. 1885); »Voornaamste voortbrengselen van Nederlandsch Indie« (das. 1860–66, 4 Tle.); »Het eiland Sumatra« (das. 1873); »Java, geographisch, ethnologisch, historisch« (Haarl. 1873–82, 3 Bde.; 2. Aufl. von Snelleman und Niermeyer 1895–1907, 4 Bde.); »Ontdekkersen onderzoekers« (Leiden 1884); »Daniel Veth's reizen in Angola« (mit Snelleman, Haarlem 1887); »Uit Oosten West« (Arnh. 1886), eine Erklärung und Etymologie malaiischer und andrer fremder Wörter; »Het paard onder de volken van het Maleische ras« (Leiden 1894). Auch besorgte er eine niederländische Ausgabe von Wallaces Werk über den Malaiischen Archipel (»Insulinde«, Amsterd. 1869–71, 2 Bde.) und die Herausgabe der wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse der Sumatra-Expedition 1877–79: »Midden Sumatra« (Leiden 1881–91,4 Abt.). V. ist Begründer der Niederländischen Geographischen Gesellschaft.
