Stationers' Company

Stationers' Company (engl., spr. ßtēsch'nörs kömmpĕnĭ), »Buchhändlergilde«, eine seit 1403 in London bestehende, seit 1557 mit Korporationsrechten und wichtigen Privilegien ausgestattete Vereinigung der stationarii, d. h. der Personen, welche die Herstellung und den Verkauf von Büchern oder ein damit verbundenes Gewerbe betrieben (jetzt bezeichnet stationer im Englischen nur noch den Schreibwarenhändler). Bis zum Erlaß der Copyright Act von 1842 besaß die S. C. das unbeschränkte Monopol des Druckschriftenverlags in England. Die von ihr in der Stationers' Hall zu London (unweit Paternoster Row und der St. Paulskathedrale) geführten Register über die buchhändlerischen Verordnungen und Privilegien sowie über die in England neu erscheinenden Bücher sind nicht nur für das englische Urheberrecht, sondern auch für die Geschichte des englischen Buchhandels und der englischen Literatur von Bedeutung.
