Milman

Milman (spr. millmǟn), Henry Hart, engl. Dichter und Historiker, geb. 10. Febr. 1791 in London, gest. 24. Sept. 1868, war 1821–31 Professor der Poesie in Oxford, erhielt 1835 die Pfründe von St. Margaret in Westminster und ward 1849 Dekan an der St. Paulskirche in London. Als Dichter machte er sich durch das heroische Gedicht »Samor, lord of the Bright City« (1818) und die Trauerspiele: »Fazio« (1815), »Fall of Jerusalem« (1820), »Belzhazzar« (1822), »Martyr of Antiochia« (1822), »Anne Boleyn« (1826) bekannt. Als Historiker schrieb er: »History of christianity to the extinction of paganism« (1840, 3 Bde.), die er in der »History of christianity down to the Reformation« (1853, 4 Bde.) fortsetzte, und »History of Latin christianity« (1855–57, 6 Bde.; neue Ausg. dieser Werke 1883); ferner »History of the Jews« (1830, 3 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1894), »Annals of St. Paul's« (2. Aufl 1869) sowie »Life of Edward Gibbon« (1839). Seine »Poetical and dramatic works« erschienen gesammelt London 1839, 3 Bde. Vgl.
