Michăel (hebr., »wer ist wie Gott?«), bei den nach exilischen Juden einer der sieben Erzengel (s. Engel, S. 786), Schutzengel des jüdischen Volkes und als solcher dem Sammael gegenübergestellt. Die Offenbarung Johannis stellt ihn als Sieger über den Drachen oder Satan dar, und die Christen nahmen ihn daher später häufig zum Schutzpatron für ihre Kirchen, namentlich in Deutschland, wo viele Züge des alten Wodankultus auf ihn übergingen. Die katholische Kirche kennt zwei Feste zum Gedächtnis des M.: am 8. Mai und 29. Sept. Ersteres zur Erinnerung der Erscheinung des Engels auf dem Berge Gargano, die 493 geschehen sein soll, eingerichtet, hat sich nur in den Kalendern erhalten; letzteres dagegen, dessen Anfänge man schon in sehr frühe Zeit verlegt, und das unter Karl d. Gr. auch nach Deutschland gekommen ist, wird heute noch als kirchlicher Festtag begangen. Die evangelische Kirche hat dies Michaelisfest vielfach zum Erntedankfest umgestaltet. Unter den zahlreichen künstlerischen Darstellungen des Erzengels, der meist als Besieger des Teufels, mit der Lanze ihn durchbohrend, ihn niedertretend und in den Abgrund stürzend erscheint, sind die Bilder von A. del Sarto (Florenz), Raffael (Louvre), Signorelli (Sixtinische Kapelle) hervorzuheben.
