Brisson (spr. -óng), 1) Mathurin Jacques, Naturforscher, geb. 30. April 1723 zu Fontenay-le-Comte in Poitou, gest. 23. Juni 1806 in Boissi bei Versailles als Professor der Physik in Paris. Er schrieb: »Ornithologia« (Par. 1760, 6 Bde.), eine Beschreibung von 1500 Vögeln mit 500 Abbildungen; »Pesanteur spécifique des corps« (das. 1787; deutsch, Leipz. 1795); »Dictionnaire raisonné de physique« (2. Aufl., Par. 1800, 2 Bde.); »Le règne animal diviséen neuf classes« (das. 1756; lat., Leiden 1762).

2) Eugène Henri, franz. Politiker, geb. 31. Juli 1835 in Bourges, wurde in Paris 1859 Advokat und Mitarbeiter oppositioneller Zeitungen. Im Februar 1871 zum Mitgliede der Nationalversammlung erwählt, schloß er sich der äußersten Linken an. Seit 1876 Mitglied der Deputiertenkammer, gehörte er zur Union républicaine und ward zu deren Präsidenten gewählt. Als sein Protektor Gambetta im November 1881 ein Ministerium bildete, wurde B. Präsident der Deputiertenkammer und blieb es wegen seiner Rechtlichkeit auch nach Gambettas Sturz. Nach dem Sturz Ferrys, im April 1885, übernahm er, um die Einigkeit der republikanischen Parteien nicht zu gefährden, das Präsidium des Ministeriums und das Portefeuille der Justiz (Januar 1886). 1894–99 war er wieder Präsident der Deputiertenkammer.
