Braid

Braid, James, Arzt, geb. 1795 in der Grafschaft Fife in Schottland, gest. 25. März 1860 in Manchester, wurde Arzt bei den Bergwerken von Leads Hill in Lanarkshire und lebte später in Manchester. Er entdeckte 1841, daß das längere Anstarren glänzender Gegenstände eigentümliche schlafartige (hypnotische) Zustände hervorbringt (Braidismus), und widmete sich seitdem der Erforschung dieser Zustände und ihrer Anwendung zur Heilung von Nervenkrankheiten. Er ist der eigentliche Entdecker des Hypnotismus, aber seine Entdeckungen wurden stark angefochten und gerieten in Vergessenheit. Er schrieb: »Neurypnology, or the rationale of nervous sleep, considered in relation to animal magnetism« (Lond. u. Edinb. 1843); »Magic, witchcraft, animal magnetism, hypnotism and electrobiology« (3. Aufl., Lond. 1852); »Observations on trance: or human hybernation« (das. 1850). Unter dem Titel »Der Hypnotismus« übersetzte Preyer ausgewählte Schriften Braids (Berl. 1882). Vgl. W. Preyer, Die Entdeckung des Hypnotismus (Berl. 1881).
