Roll, Alfred Philippe, franz. Maler, geb. 10. März 1847 in Paris, begann seine künstlerische Laufbahn als Ornament- und Musterzeichner, wurde später Schüler der Ecole des beaux-arts unter Gérôme und bildete sich bei Bonnat weiter aus. Er begann mit Landschaften, die den Einfluß Daubignys verraten, und Tierstücken. Seine erste große Komposition, die durch ergreifende Charakteristik ausgezeichnete Szene aus der Überschwemmung von Toulouse im Juni 1877 (1878; Museum in Havre), ist in der düstern Färbung von Bonnat, in der Anordnung von Géricaults Floß der Medusa beeinflußt. Aber schon das darauffolgende Fest des Silen (Museum in Gent) zeigt einen frischen Naturalismus, dem R. seitdem treu geblieben ist. Zugleich ist er einer der entschiedensten Anhänger der Freilichtmalerei. Außer ländlichen Szenen (die Bäuerin Manda Lamétrie, im Luxembourg-Museum), Tierbildern, meist Pferden und jungen Stieren, weiblichen Akten und Landschaften hat er zahlreiche Bildnisse, darunter die Präsidenten Carnot, Faure und Fallières, Jules Simon, A. Dumas, Alphand, Rochefort etc., gemalt. Die soziale Frage berührte er in dem Streik der Kohlenarbeiter (1880, Museum in Valenciennes), dem Bauplatz in Suresnes (1885, Museum in Cognac) und den Erdarbeitern, Kriegsszenen schilderte er in den Bildern Halte-là (1875, Museum in Versailles) und der Krieg (1887, Luxembourg), historische Ereignisse in dem Fest des 14. Juli 1880 (1882, Museum der Stadt Paris), dem figurenreichen Jubiläum der Revolution von 1789 (1893, Versailles) und der Grundsteinlegung der Alexanderbrücke 1896 (ebendaselbst).
