Map

Map (latinisiert Mapes), Walter, engl. Schriftsteller in lateinischer Sprache, geb. um 1140 in Wales oder in dem englischen Grenzdistrikt Herefordshire, gest. um 1209, studierte in Paris, kam unter Thomas Beckets Kanzlerschaft an den englischen Hof, wurde Wanderrichter in den westlichen Grafschaften, nahm 1179 am Lateranischen Konzil teil und erhielt 1197 eine Stelle als Erzdiakon in Oxford. Ein sicheres Werk von ihm ist »De nugis curialium« (»Vom Zeitvertreib der Höflinge«, hrsg. von Th. Wright für die Camden Society, Lond. 1850), das in Form von Sagen und Anekdoten an den Zuständen des Staates und der Kirche scharfe Satire übt. Früh wurde ihm auch ein Zyklus von vier französischen Prosaromanen zugeschrieben (»Lancelot«, die zwei Teile der »Suche nach dem heiligen Gral« und »Arturs Tod«), die für die Ausgestaltung der Artur- und Gralsage von höchster Bedeutung waren; doch ist seine Verfasserschaft bestritten. Am schwächsten ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, daß er die berühmten lateinischen Satiren auf das Mönchsleben (»Latin poems commonly attributed to W. Mapes«, hrsg. von Th. Wright) dichtete, die sich um die Figur eines naiv sinnlichen, trinklustigen und verbuhlten Klostermannes namens Golias drehen (z. B. »Beichte des Golias«, »Testament des Golias«) und danach Goliardenlieder heißen. Das Studenten-lied »Mihi est propositum in taverna mori« ist aus zwei Stellen der Goliasbeichte erwachsen. Vgl.
