Wright (spr. rait), 1) Thomas, engl. Gelehrter und Schriftsteller, geb. 21. April 1810 bei Ludlow in Wales, gest. 23. Dez. 1877 in London, studierte in Cambridge und kam 1836 nach London, wo er als Kultur-, Literaturhistoriker und Archäolog eine überaus fruchtbare und verdienstliche Tätigkeit entfaltete, während er als Sprachforscher und Herausgeber älterer Denkmale flüchtig und oberflächlich arbeitete. Von seinen sehr zahlreichen Werken sind zu erwähnen. »Queen Elizabeth and her times« (1838, 2 Bde.); »Essays on the literature, superstition and history of England in the middle ages« (1846, 2 Bde.) und die »Biographia britannica literaria« (1842–46, 2 Bde.), welche die angelsächsische und anglonormannische Periode umfassen; »The Celt, the Roman, and the Saxon« (1852, 5. Aufl. 1890); »Dictionary of obsolete and provincial English« (1857, 2 Bde.); »Domestic manners in England during the middle ages« (1861; neue Ausg. als »Homes of other days«, 1871); »Anglosaxon and old English vocabularies« (1857 und 1873 privatim gedruckt; 2. Aufl. von Wülker, 1884, 2 Bde.); »Early mysteries and other latin poems of the Xll. and XIII. centuries« (1838); »The Chester plays« (1841); »Political songs of England from the reign of John to that of Edward II.« (1859–61, 2 Bde.) und »Uriconium. a historical account of the ancient Roman city« (1872).

2) William, namhafter Orientalist, geb. 17. Jan. 1830 in Bengalen, gest. 22. Mai 1889 in Cambridge, studierte in St. Andrews und in Halle, wurde 1856 Professor des Arabischen an der Universität London, 1858 in Dublin und erhielt 1870 eine Berufung nach Cambridge als Professor des Semitischen. Er veröffentlichte unter anderm: »The travels of Ibn Jubair« (arab. Text, Leiden 1852; 2. Aufl., von de Goeje, 1907); »Opuscula arabica« (das. 1859); el-Mubarrads »Kâmil« (arab., Leipz. 1874–92, 2 Bde., vollendet von de Goeje); »Contributions to the apocryphal literature of the New Testament« (syrisch u. engl., Lond. 1865); »Apocryphal acts of the apostles« (syr. u. engl., das. 1871, 2 Bde.); »The homilies of Aphraates« (syr., Bd. 1, das. 1869); »The chronicle of Joshua the Stylite« (syr. u. engl., Cambridge 1882); »The book of Kalîlah and Dimnah« (syr., nach der arab. Übersetzung, Lond. 1884); »Catalogue of the Syriac manuscripts in the British Museum« (das. 1870–72, 3 Bde.); »Catalogue of the Ethiopic manuscripts in the British Museum« (das. 1877) und »The empire of the Hittites« (2. Aufl. das. 1886). Seine englische Bearbeitung von C. P. Casparis arabischer Grammatik (3. Aufl., von Robertson Smith und de Goeje revidiert, Cambridge 1896–98, 2 Bde.) ist zur Zeit die beste Darstellung der altarabischen Grammatik. Aus seinem Nachlaß wurden veröffentlicht: »Lectures on the comparative grammar of the Semitic languages« (Cambridge 1890, von seinem Nachfolger W. Robertson Smith herausgegeben); »A short history of Syriac literature« (das. 1894) und »The ecclesiastical history of Eusebius« (syr., zusammen mit N. Mc Lean, das. 1898). Wesentlich beigesteuert hat er zu den Publikationen der »Palaeographical Society« (1875 f.).
