Mably

Mably, Gabriel Bonnot de, franz. Schriftsteller, geb. 14. März 1709 in Grenoble, gest. 23. April 1785 in Paris, wurde Kanonikus und Sekretär seines Onkels, des Kardinals und Ministers Tencin, der ihn wiederholt zu diplomatischen Missionen verwendete. Seit 1746 widmete er aber die meiste Zeit in Paris den geschichtlichen Studien. Seine Schriften zeichnen sich durch das Streben aus, die Politik auf moralischer Grundlage aufzubauen und den Staat wieder auf den einfachen, ursprünglichen Zustand der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft zurückzuführen. Von seinen Schriften sind hervorzuheben: »Parallèle des Romains et des Français par rapport an gouvernement« (Par. 1740, 2 Bde.), umgearbeitet in »Observations sur les Romains« (Genf 1751) und »Observations sur l'histoire de la France« (das. 1765, 2 Bde.), von Guizot neu herausgegeben und mit einem »Essai sur l'histoire de la France« (Par. 1823–24, 4 Bde.; neue Aufl. 1840) vermehrt; ferner: »Le droit public de l'Europe« (Amsterd. 1748, 3 Bde.; oft aufgelegt); »Entretien de Phocion sur le rapport de la morale avec la politique« (1763); »De l'étude de l'histoire« (1778); »Manière d'écrire l'histoire« (1782) u. a. Gesamtausgaben seiner Werke erschienen Paris 1789, 12 Bde.; 1795, 15 Bde.; 1797, 12 Bde.; 1818, 6 Bde.; die »Œuvres posthumes« 1797, 3 Bde. Vgl.
