Courthope (spr. kōrt-hōp), William John, engl. Schriftsteller, geb. 1842 bei Lewes (Surrey), wurde in Harrow und Oxford erzogen, schrieb insbes. in die »Quarterly Review« und begründete die »National Review«, deren Redakteur er bis 1887 war. Seine Erstlingswerke waren Gedichte, die viel Phantasie verraten und sich durch ungemein melodiöse Sprache auszeichnen, so besonders die aristophanische Satire »The Paradise of Birds« (1878). Am bekanntesten ist er als Literarhistoriker im Gebiete des 18. Jahrh., besonders als Mitherausgeber der Werke von Alexander Pope (mit Elwyn), deren Schlußband die Biographie des Dichters von C. enthält (1889). Außerdem schrieb er die Biographie von Addison (1884), »The liberal movement in English literature« (1885), »History of English Poetry« (1895–97, Bd. 1 u. 2) und »Life in poetry, law in taste«, Vorlesungen (1901).
