Trenton, 1) Hauptstadt des nordamerikan. Staates New Jersey, an dem bis hierher schiffbaren Delaware und dem Delaware- und Raritankanal, Eisenbahnknotenpunkt, hat ein schönes Kapitol, 2 öffentliche Bibliotheken, Lehrerseminar, Irrenanstalt, Zuchthaus, Zeughaus, Heim für Soldatenkinder und (1906) 86,355 Einw., darunter 4114 in Deutschland Geborne. Die Industrie förderte 1905 in 312 Betrieben mit 14,252 Arbeitern für 32,719,945 Doll. Waren. Berühmt ist die Tonwaren- und Steingutfabrikation (40 Fabriken, 4571 Arbeiter, 5,882,701 Doll.), namhaft Maschinen- und Wagenbau, Eisen- und Stahlbereitung, Kautschukindustrie. T. wurde 1680 gegründet und 1790 zur Hauptstadt erhoben. Hier siegte 26. Dez. 1776 Washington über die Engländer. Vgl. Lee, History of T.
