Pathan: Pathan (Patan), der eigentliche nationale Name der Afghanen, die ihr Land Pakhtan-Khua und ihre Sprache Pukhtu oder Puchtu nennen; außerdem die auch als Rohilla bezeichneten, (1901) 3,404,701 Köpfe zählenden P. in Britisch-Indien, davon 1,115,821 im Pandschab, 815,859 in den Vereinigten Provinzen und 433,783 in Bengalen. Sie sind Mohammedaner, aber völlig hinduisiert. In der Geschichte Indiens von großer Bedeutung, herrschen sie noch heute über die Vasallenstaaten: Maler Kotla und Dudschana im Pandschab, Rampur und Rohilkand in den Vereinigten Provinzen, Bhopal in Zentralindien und Tonk in Radschputana.
