Palissy

Palissy, Bernard, Glasmaler und Kunsttöpfer, geb. um (1499) 1510 in der franz. Provinz Saintonge, gest. 1589, war in Saintes tätig und wurde als Hugenotte durch den Herzog von Montmorency, später durch Katharina von Medici, die ihm ein Patent als »Erfinder der rustiques figulines (s. Palissyschüsseln) des Königs« gab, vor Verfolgungen gerettet. Er entdeckte das Verfahren, Tongefäße mit jaspisartigem Email herzustellen, siedelte 1565 nach Paris über, wo er im Tuileriengarten künstliche Grotten mit Pflanzen und seltsamen Tieren aus Terrakotta herstellte und daneben auch als Kunsttöpfer tätig war, und flüchtete nach der Bartholomäusnacht nach Sedan. Er hielt dort und in der Umgegend wissenschaftliche Vorträge, wurde aber um 1587 wegen Ketzerei in die Bastille gebracht. Er schrieb: »Récepte véritable par laquelle tous les hommes de France pourront apprendre à multiplier et augmenter leur thrésors, etc.« (La Rochelle 1564) und »Discours admirables de la nature des eaux et fontaines, etc.« (Par. 1580), beide neu herausgegeben in den »Œuvres complètes de B.
