Michie

Michie (spr. mitschi), Alexander, schott. Reisender und Chinakenner, geb. 1833 in Earlferry (Fiseshire), gest. 8. Aug. 1902 in London, ging als Kaufmann 1853 nach Hongkong und 1855 nach Schanghai, von wo er durch Sibirien heimkehrte. Wieder nach Schanghai zurückgekehrt, wurde er zum Präsidenten der Handelskammer erwählt und von ihr mit einer Sendung in das westliche China betraut. Nach mehrjährigem Aufenthalt in Europa ging er 1883 aufs neue nach China und ließ sich in Tientsin nieder. Er schrieb: »The Siberian route from Peking to St. Petersburg through the deserts and steppes of Mongolia and Tartary« (Lond. 1864); »Missionaries in China« (das. 1891); »An Englishman in China during the Victorian era« (das. 1900, 2 Bde.); »China and christianity« (Boston 1900).
