Hurst Castle

Hurst Castle (spr. hörst kaßl), altes Küstenfort in Hampshire (England), 5 km südwestlich von Lymington, auf einer in den Solent hineinragenden Landzunge gegenüber der Nordwestküste der Insel Wight gelegen, wurde von Heinrich VIII. um 1535 angelegt, geriet dann in Verfall und ist neuerdings stärker befestigt worden. Es besteht aus einem von 900 m langen Granitmauern umgebenen Rundturm. Hier wurde Karl I. 1.–17. Dez. 1648 gefangen gehalten. Die Ankunft der großen Ozeandampfer wird von hier aus nach London und der Insel Wight telegraphisch gemeldet.
