Heutsz (spr. hȫtß), Johannes Benedictus van, niederländ. General, geb. 3. Febr. 1851 in Koevorden (Drente), trat 1867 als Freiwilliger ins Heer, wurde 1872 Offizier und zeichnete sich, bald danach in die niederländisch-indische Armee aufgenommen, in Atschin (Sumatra) aus. Nachdem er 1882 an der höhern Kriegsschule im Haag studiert hatte, kehrte er 1883 nach Niederländisch-Indien zurück und wurde 18896)Generalstabschef in Atschin; als Major (seit 1891) veröffentlichte er 1893 auf Grund seiner Erfahrungen über die Fehler der bisherigen Kriegsführung den Artikel »Die Unterwerfung von Atjeh« (in der »Indischen Militärzeitschrift«; Sonderdruck, Batavia 1893), der viel Staub aufwirbelte. Seit 1897 Oberst und seit März 1898 Gouverneur und Oberbefehlshaber auf demselben Schauplatz, zeigte er, daß er nicht bloß in der Theorie Besseres konnte: durch Umsicht und Tatkraft schlug er schnell die Aufstandsbewegung nieder. 1901 zum Generalleutnant des niederländisch-indischen Heeres befördert, kehrte er 1904 nach der Heimat zurück und erhielt schon 21. Juli d. J. an Stelle des Generals Rooseboom die Ernennung zum Generalgouverneur von Niederländisch-Indien. Vgl. Alex, Generaal van H. (Haag 1904).
