Alstonĭa

Alstonĭa R. Br., Gattung der Apocynazeen, Gehölze mit meist wirtelständigen Blättern, weißen, meist kleinen Blüten in vielblütigen quirligen Rispen und linealischen Teilfrüchten. 30 Arten in Ostasien und auf den pazifischen Inseln. A. scholaris R. Br. (Teufelsbaum), ein Baum in Ostindien, Australien, Neuguinea, vielleicht auch in Ostafrika, liefert die bittere, als Heilmittel geschätzte Ditarinde, die drei Alkaloide: amorphes Ditamin C19H19NO2, kristallisierbares Ditain (Echitamin) C22H28N2O4 und Echitenin C20H27NO4, enthält. Aus dem Holz werden Schreibtafeln für Schüler gemacht. A. constricta F. Müll., in Neusüdwales und Queensland, enthält in seiner arzneilich und zum Färben benutzten unangenehm bittern Rinde drei Alkaloide, amorphes Alstonin C21H20N2O4 und Porphyrin.
