Elburz

Elburz (Alburs), Gebirge in Nordpersien am Kaspischen Meer, umfaßt denjenigen Teil vom nördlichen Randgebirge des iranischen Plateaus, der zwischen dem Tal des Sefid Rud im W. und 56° östl. L. im O. liegt (s. Karte »Persien«). Es steigt im vulkanischen Demawend zu 5500 m Höhe an, hat 650 km Länge, 110 km Breite, Paßhöhen von ca. 3000 und, vom Demawend abgesehen, Gipfel- und Kammhöhen von 2900–48001 Tacht Soleiman ca. 4850 km. Der E. besteht aus einer Reihe paralleler Ketten, die zuweilen durch Querjoche verbunden sind und fast ausschließlich aus Sedimentgebilden fast sämtlicher Altersstufen bis zum Tertiär bestehen. Der nördliche Abhang ist vegetationsreich, der südliche kahl.
