Dôle (spr. dōl'), Arrondissementshauptstadt im franz. Depart. Jura, 205 m ü. M., rechts am schiffbaren Doubs und am Rhone-Rheinkanal gelegen, Knotenpunkt an der Lyoner Bahn, treibt ansehnlichen Weinbau, Steinbrüche, Fabrikation von Feuerspritzen und Metallwaren, Kochherden, Lebkuchen, Likör, chemischen Produkten etc., Handel mit Getreide, Mehl und Käse, hat eine gotische Hauptkirche (von 1509), zahlreiche Fontänen, ein College, eine Zeichen- und eine Musikschule, eine Bibliothek (35,000 Bände und 600 Manuskripte), ein Museum (Gemälde u. Altertümer), ein Theater, ein Irrenhaus, ist Sitz eines Handelsgerichts und zählt (1901) 12,733 (als Gemeinde 14,627) Einw. Die Promenade Cours St.-Maurice gewährt ein reiches Panorama bis zum Montblanc. – D. war schon eine Stadt zur Zeit der Römer, von deren Bauten noch Reste erhalten sind. Später gehörte es zum arelatischen Reiche; 1162 berief Kaiser Friedrich I. eine allgemeine Monarchen- und Fürstenzusammenkunft zur Schlichtung der streitigen Papstwahl nach D.; indes der Plan mißglückte. Seit dieser Zeit war die Stadt Hauptort der Franche-Comté, mit einer Universität und einem Parlament (beide später nach Besançon verlegt) und eine starke Festung, um welche die Franzosen mit den Spaniern vom 15. bis 17. Jahrh. vielfach kämpften. Am 21. Jan. 1871 wurde D. von General Manteuffel besetzt und die Eisenbahn zerstört, wodurch der Bourbakischen Armee der Rückzug nach Lyon abgeschnitten wurde. D. ist Geburtsort des Generals Malet.
