Clough (spr. klass), Arthur Hugh, Dichter, geb. 1819 in Liverpool, gest. 1861 auf einer Reise in Florenz, wurde in Rugby erzogen, studierte in Oxford, gewann 1841 eine Fellowship in Oriel College, folgte mit Interesse der Oxforder Bewegung, trat aber nicht zum Katholizismus über, sondern ging nach Paris, um die Früchte der Julirevolution zu sehen, und war in Rom während der Belagerung durch die Franzosen im Juli 1849. Später wurde er Sekretär bei der Militärerziehungskommission. Er schrieb: »The bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich« (Oxford 1848), ein Idyll in Hexametern, das einen Ferienaufenthalt in Hochschottland schildert, und die »Amours de voyage«, in denen er seine Erlebnisse des Jahres 1849 festhielt. Cloughs Verse spiegeln einen edlen Charakter, oft mit einem frischen Humor, immer mit hohem Empfinden, aber jedesmal abfallend in elegische Passivität. Nach seinem Tod erschienen »Poems, with a memoir« (von Palgrave, Lond. 1862) und »Poems and prose remains, with letters and a memoir« (hrsg. von seiner Witwe, das. 1869, 2 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1883–88).
