Cliffort

Cliffort (spr. -fört, Clifford), George, engl. Gesandter in Holland, machte sich durch die Unterstützung, die er Linné gewährte, um die Naturwissenschaft verdient. Auf seinem Gut Hartecamp bei Haarlem hatte er den reichsten botanischen Garten in Europa, eine Menagerie vierfüßiger Tiere und Vögel, ein naturhistorisches Museum und ein Herbarium. Er wählte Linné zum Hausarzt und Aufseher seines Gartens und bestritt die Kosten der Herausgabe von dessen »Hortus Cliffortianus«. Er starb 1750.
