Clams, allerlei Muscheln, die in Nordamerika als Nahrung dienen. Am wichtigsten ist die Hard Clam (Venus mercenaria), die sich in Menge an der ganzen atlantischen Küste findet. Der dunkle Fleck im Innern der dicken Schale wurde von den Indianern als Schmuck getragen und gab abgeschliffen die wertvollste Sorte ihres Muschelgeldes (Wampum). 1880 wurden über 300 Mill. gefangen. Die Soft Clam (Mya arenaria) ist nördlich vom Kap Hatteras, gemein in allen Flußmündungen und an sandigen Strandstellen. Genossen wird sie fast nur gekocht und gebraten. Mit Austern ist sie auch nach Kalifornien gekommen und findet sich jetzt in der Bai von San Francisco in Menge. Die riesige Sea Clam (Mactra solidissima) kommt nur nördlich von New Jersey vor und wird hauptsächlich bei Cape Cod gesammelt. Sie lebt in flachem Wasser und wird nach Stürmen oft massenhaft lebend aus Land geworfen. Sie kommt hauptsächlich in Boston auf den Markt, wird aber mehr als Köder beim Fischfang oder als Schweinefutter verwendet; die dicken Schalen dienen zu Wegebauten und zum Kalkbrennen. Die Razor Clam (8olen americanus), nahe verwandt den gleichfalls eßbaren Cannolicchie von Neapel (s. Messerscheide), wird von Long Island bis New Jersey gefischt, aber fast nur als Köder gebraucht.
