Wells, 1) (früher W. next the Sea) Hafenstadt an der Nordküste der engl. Grafschaft Norfolk, mit einigem Handel, Austernfischerei und (1901) 2494 Einw. Dabei Holkham Hall, der fürstliche Landsitz des Grafen Leicester. – 2) Stadt (city) in Somersetshire (England), südlich von Bristol, am Fuße der Mendiphügel, ist Bischofssitz, hat eine 1214–1329 erbaute gotische Kathedrale, ein anglikanisches Priesterseminar, einen alten bischöflichen Palast, Lateinschule, Irrenhaus, Fabrikation von Bürsten und Papier und (1901) 4849 Einw. In der Nähe Wookey Cavern, eine berühmte Höhle.
