Wanamaker

Wanamaker (spr. -mēker), John, amerikan. Kaufmann und Politiker, geb. 11. Juli 1838 in Philadelphia als Sohn eines deutschen Schneiders, begründete dort 1861 ein Herrengarderobegeschäft, das ungeheuern Ertrag abwarf. Er sorgte gut für seine Gehilfen und führte ein System ein, diese am Geschäftsgewinn zu beteiligen. Auch für kirchliche Interessen war er tätig und erwarb eine große Gemäldegalerie. Unter dem republikanischen Präsidenten Harrison war er vom März 1889–93 Generalpostmeister.
