Wakidi

Wakidi, Mohammed ibn'Omar, arab. Historiker, geb. 747 in Medina, gest. 823 als Kadi in Bagdad, war ein genauer Kenner der ältesten historischen Überlieferung im Islam und ein gründlicher Chronolog. Von seinen Werken ist uns, abgesehen von den reichen Materialien, die sein Sekretär und Schüler Ibn Saʾad (gest. 845) in seinem großen »Klassenbuch« (das zurzeit im Auftrag der preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften von Sachau u. a. herausgegeben wird) verarbeitet hat, nur sein »Kitâb el Maghâzî« (»Buch der Feldzüge des Propheten«) erhalten, eins der ältesten und wertvollsten Werke zur Geschichte Mohammeds (zum Teil hrsg. von A. v. Kremer, Kalkutta 1856, verkürzt deutsch wiedergegeben von Wellhausen, Berl. 1882). Die unter Wakidis Namen gehenden Werke über Eroberungszüge der muslimischen Heere sind alle historische Romane jüngern Datums.
