Wakefield, City of (spr. ŭēkfīld), Stadt (municipal borough) im Westbezirk von Yorkshire (England), 14 km südlich von Leeds, in reizender Lage am Calder, hat eine gotische Hauptkirche aus dem 14. Jahrh. (seit 1861 von Scott restauriert), ein Rathaus im Renaissancestil (1880), eine berühmte Lateinschule (1591), Kunstgewerbeschule mit Museum, Irrenhaus, Kornbörse und (1901) 41,413 Einw. W. hat Kammgarnspinnerei, Drahtzieherei, Maschinenbau, Fabrikation von Ackergeräten, Chemikalien und Seife, Brauerei, namentlich aber Handel mit Korn, Mehl und Vieh. W. ist Sitz eines anglikanischen Bischofs. Eine Kapelle auf der alten Brücke erinnert an die Schlacht von W. (30. Dez. 1460), in der Richard, Herzog von York, sein Leben verlor.
