Thompson, 1) Sir Henry, Mediziner, geb. 6. Aug. 1820 zu Framlingham in Suffolk, gest. 18. April 1904 in London, studierte in London und wurde 1866 Professor der Chirurgie daselbst. Er erwarb sich große Verdienste um die Behandlung der Blasenkrankheiten, förderte besonders die Lithotripsie und Lithotomie und schrieb unter anderm: »The diseases of the prostate« (1861, 6. Aufl. 1886); »Practical lithotomy and lithotrity« (1863; deutsch von Goldschmidt, Kaff. 1882); »Clinical lectures on diseases of the urinary organs« (1868, 8. Aufl. 1888; deutsch von Casper, Münch. 1889); »Lectures on some important points connected with the surgery of the urinary organs« (1884; deutsch von Dupuis, Wiesbad. 1885); »On tumours of the bladder« (1885; deutsch von Wittelshöfer, Wien 1885); »On the suprapubic operation for opening the bladder for stone or for tumours« (1886); »Modern cremation, its history and practice« (1889, 4. Aufl. 1901; deutsch, Berl. 1889); »Food and feeding« (11. Aufl. 1901); »The unknown God« (1902). Unter dem Pseudonym Pen Oliver schrieb er die Romane »Charley Kingston's aunt« (1885, 3. Aufl. 1904) und »All But« (1886).

2) Silvanus Phillips, Physiker, geb. 19. Juni 1851 in York, studierte in Flounders Institute bei Pontefract und an der Royal School of Mines in London, wurde 1876 Lecturer und 1878 Professor für Experimentalphysik am University College in Bristol, gründete dort das Physikalische Laboratorium und wurde 1885 Professor der Physik in London und Direktor des City and Guilds Technical College zu Finsbury in London. Er schrieb: »Elementary lessons in electricity and magnetism« (1881, über 50 Auflagen; deutsch von Himstedt, 2. Aufl., Tübing. 1897); »Dynamo-electric machinery« (1884, 7. Aufl. 1904; deutsch von Grawinkel; in 7. Aufl. neu bearbeitet von Strecker und Vesper, Halle 1907), dazu als 2. Band: »Alternating-current machinery« (1905); »The electromagnet« (1891; deutsch, das. 1894); »Polyphase electric currents and alternate current motors« (1895, 2. Aufl. 1900; deutsch, 2. Aufl., Halle 1901–04); »Latest electrodynamic machinery« (1897); »Michael Faraday, his life and work« (1898; deutsch, Halle 1900).
