Pontefract (spr. pónntìsrĕkt oder pómmsrĕt), Stadt (municipal borough) im Westbezirk von Yorkshire (England), unweit des Zusammenflusses von Aire und Calder, mit alter Allerheiligenkirche (im 17. Jahrh. zerstört, seit 1838 teilweise restauriert), hübschem Rathaus (1785), Malzdarren, Anbau von Süßholz, Pferderennen und (1901) 13,427 Einw. P. erscheint im Domesdaybook als »Tateschale«. Dabei auf steiler Höhe die Ruinen des Schlosses, in dem König Richard II. nach seiner Absetzung von Heinrich IV. gefangen gehalten wurde und 14. Febr. 1400 wahrscheinlich eines gewaltsamen Todes starb.
