Symonds

Symonds (spr. ßimmends), John Addington, engl. Dichter und Kulturhistoriker, geb. 5. Okt. 1840 in Bristol, gest. 19. April 1893 in Rom, studierte in Oxford, hielt sich wiederholt in Italien zu Kunst- und Kulturstudien auf und ließ sich später aus Gesundheitsrücksichten in Davos nieder. Sein Hauptwerk ist die »Renaissance in Italy« (7 Bde., 1875 bis 1886 u. öfter), dem später die »Short history of the Renaissance« (1893) folgte. Außerdem veröffentlichte er: »Introduction to the study of Dante« (1872, 3. Aufl. 1893); »Studies of the Greek poets« (1873–79, 2 Bde.; 3. Aufl. 1892); »Sketches in Italy and Greece« (1874); »Sketches and studies in Italy« (1879); »Italian byways« (1883); »Shakespere's predecessors in the English drama« (1884); »Essays, speculative and suggestive« (1890, 2 Bde.; 3. Aufl. 1907); »Life of Michelangelo Buonarroti« (1892, 2 Bde.) sowie die kleinern Biographien von Shelley (1878), Phil. Sidney (1886), Ben Jonson (1887) u. a. Dazu mehrere Bände Gedichte: »Many moods« (1878), »New and old« (1880), »Animi figura« (1882), »Vagabunduli libellus« (1884), »Wine, women and song; mediaeval songs« (1884) und eine ausgezeichnete Übersetzung der Sonette von Michelangelo und T.
