Sepsis (griech.), die Fäulnis, in der Medizin besonders eine Zersetzung infolge des Eindringens bestimmter krankheiterregender Bakterien in den Körper, womit immer schweres, die Kräfte aufzehrendes Fieber verbunden ist (Septichämie). Bei der S. (also Fäulnis) abgestorbener organischer Substanzen sind andre Bakterien, die Fäulnisbakterien, tätig.
