Senigallĭa

Senigallĭa (früher Sinigaglia), Stadt in der ital. Provinz und dem Kreis Ancona, an der Mündung der Misa ins Adriatische Meer und an der Eisenbahn Bologna-Ancona, Bischofssitz, hat eine Kathedrale (15. Jahrh.), Synagoge, Theater, Kastell der Herzoge von Urbino (15. Jahrh.), einen bischöflichen Palast (Renaissancebau von Genga, 1516), Lyzeum, Gymnasium, Seminar, Technische Schule, Bibliothek (18,000 Bände), Zuchthaus, Zuckerraffinerie, Seidenspinnereien, Hanf- und Leinweberei, Handel, einen kleinen Hafen, in den 1904: 101 Schiffe von 3343 Ton. eingelaufen sind, Seebad und (1901) 5635 (als Gemeinde 23,156) Einw. S. ist Vaterstadt des Papstes Pius IX. (Graf Mastai-Ferretti). Außerhalb der Stadt die Kirche Santa Maria delle Grazie mit Gemälden von Perugino und Piero della Francesca. – S. ward von den gallischen Senones gegründet und hieß ursprünglich Sena gallica. Nach S. wird auch die Schlacht vom Metaurus (s. Metauro) benannt, in der Hasdrubal 207 v. Chr. besiegt wurde. Seit 1521 gehörte es zum Kirchenstaat. Die lange Zeit bedeutende Julimesse in S. wurde 1869 aufgehoben.
