Remsen

Remsen, Ira, Chemiker, geb. 10. Febr. 1846 in New York, studierte daselbst, in München und Göttingen, war 1870–72 Assistent in Tübingen, wurde dann Professor am Williams College in Massachusetts und 1876 an der John Hopkins-Universität in Baltimore. Seine Arbeiten betreffen die anorganische wie die organische Chemie, auch schrieb er eine Anzahl eigenartiger vortrefflicher Lehrbücher: »The principles of theoretical chemistry« (5. Aufl., Philad. 1896; deutsch, Tübing. 1888); »Introduction to the study of the compounds of carbon, or Organic chemistry« (4. Aufl., Bost. 1903; deutsch, 3. Aufl., Tübing. 1897); »An introduction to the study of chemistry« (6. Aufl., New York 1901; deutsch, 3. Aufl., Tübing. 1904); »The elements of chemistry« (zuletzt das. 1902); »Inorganic chemistry advanced course« (2. Aufl., New York 1890; deutsch, 3. Aufl., Tübing. 1906); »A laboratory manual« (3. Aufl., New York 1902); »Chemical experiments« (mit Randall, 2. Aufl., das. 1902). Seit 1879 gibt er das von ihm gegründete »American Chemical Journal« heraus.
