Randall

Randall, Samuel Jackson, nordamerikan. Staatsmann, geb. 10. Okt. 1828 in Philadelphia, gest. im April 1890 in Washington, erhielt akademische Bildung, ließ sich als Geschäftsmann in seiner Vaterstadt nieder, wurde 1858 in den pennsylvanischen Staatssenat gewählt und trat 1862 als Demokrat in den Kongreß, dem er fast bis zu seinem Tod angehörte, von 1876–81 als Sprecher. Als solcher erwarb er sich besondere Verdienste in dem Wahlstreit zwischen den Präsidentschaftskandidaten Hayes und Tilden. R. wurde in mehreren Nationalkonventionen als Kandidat der demokratischen Partei für die Präsidentschaft aufgestellt, aber nicht gewählt. 1888 zog er sich vom öffentlichen Leben zurück.
