Kapkolonie, an der St. Helenabai des Atlantischen Ozeans, im O. begrenzt von den Olifant River-Bergen (Großer Winterhoek 2085 m) und durchzogen von der P.-Kette (867 m), im südlichen Teil am Großen Bergfluß fruchtbar (Getreide, Wein, Tabak), 4488 qkm mit (1891) 11,587 Einw. (darunter 6515 Weiße). Der gleichnamige Hauptort hat etwa 500 Einw.
