Parton (spr. part'n), James, amerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. 9. Febr. 1822 zu Canterbury in England, gest. 17. Okt. 1891 in Boston, kam als Kind nach Amerika, war mehrere Jahre lang Lehrer und dann Redakteur und betrat die literarische Laufbahn mit einem »Life of Greeley« (1855), dem sich die Biographien von Aaron Burr (1857), Jackson (1859), Franklin (1864), J. J. Astor (1865), Jefferson (1874) und Voltaire (1881) und »General Butler in New Orleans« (1863) anschlossen. Andre Werke seiner Feder sind: »Famous Americans of recent times« (1867), »Caricature and other comic art« (1877), »Lives of illustrious men« (1881) etc., doch weist ihm die Kritik des Landes keinen hervorragenden Rang zu. – Seine Gattin Sarah Payson P., Schwester des Literaten N. P. Willis, geb. 9. Juli 1811 in Portland (Maine), gest. 10. Okt. 1872 in Brooklyn, machte als Feuilletonistin unter dem Pseudonym Fanny Fern eine Zeitlang Aufsehen.
