Mekran, Küstenlandschaft am Arabischen Meer, zwischen 58 und 62° östl. L., bis Anfang der 1860er Jahre eine Provinz Belutschistans, jetzt geteilt zwischen ihm und Persien, ist ein nur längs der Flußtäler dichter bevölkertes und fruchtbares Gebiet, das die schönsten Datteln hervorbringt, sonst ein ausgedörrtes Plateauland. Die Bevölkerung besteht aus Belutschen und Brahui; sie ist in zahlreiche Stämme zersplittert. Wegen der wichtigen indoeuropäischen Telegraphenleitung, deren Kabel hier bei Gwatar aus Land kommt, hat England seit 1863 mit mehreren Häuptlingen von M. Verträge geschlossen. S. Karte »Persien«.
